I went to the store hungry a few weeks ago and you kno what that means....everything looks delicious and you over buy. One of the things that ended up following me home were whoppers so I decided to make malted milk ball cupcakes.
Recipe:
For the cupcakes:2 1/4 cups flour
3/4 cup unsweetened dutch-process cocoa powder (I used this blend of natural and Dutched cocoa)
1/2 cup sugar
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup whole milk
1 1/2 cups malted milk powder (original flavor)
1 cup vegetable oil
3 large eggs, at room temperature
1 cup sour cream, at room temperature
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Bake ~17-20 minutes (until they bounce back in the center when lightly pressed)
I did see a recipe that added rice krispie cereal to the mix for a "crunchy cupcake" to mimick the malt balls if you want to add 1/2-1 cup (folded in gently)
I scooped out the centers, not all the way through-just about 1-1.5 inches down and so there is still enough cupcake all the way around the hole (I used a measuring Tablespoon to do this)
Blended together whipped cream and crushed whoppers.
Fill the holes with the whipped cream
Frosted with chocolate buttercream (added a tiny drop of coconut flavoring to the recipe which was amazing) Topped with more crushed whoppers
